Echoes of a Sandhill's Sunrise Ballet

There's a particular kind of magic that happens in my backyard most mornings. The sandhill cranes arrive, and if I'm lucky, I get to watch their courtship dance unfold in the early light. It's a moment of pure rhythm, wings extended, movements deliberate yet fluid, as if the bird is both performing and simply being.
Echoes of a Sandhill's Sunrise Ballet is my attempt to hold onto that moment. The crane is captured mid-dance, its feathers shifting through soft blues, whites, and warm reddish tones that echo the light of dawn. Above, a golden-yellow sun radiates across the sky, and below, the shallow water mirrors it all back in blended oranges, golds, and cool blues, a quiet, reflective surface that grounds the whole composition.
This piece builds on a layering technique I've come to rely on: alternating glazes and opaques in oil, accompanied by cold wax to add texture and depth. This process allows me to explore how light interacts with form over time, bringing the dance to a palpable intensity and subtle power. There's something about wax that lets the surface hold light differently, it catches and releases it the way water does, which felt right for this piece.
This painting is part of my Coastal Birds series, where I explore Florida's shoreline wildlife through light, water, and movement. For me, this crane is a small reminder of how much beauty exists in ordinary moments, if we slow down enough to notice it.
