Anhinga's Quiet Flame: The Story Behind the Painting
Jul 20, 2026
Anhinga's Quiet Flame is a 20 by 16 inch oil painting that captures a moment I witness nearly every late afternoon, when the sun is low and the world takes on a quiet glow. At the center of this piece is an anhinga, perched with its wings fully spread on a simple branch. Its feathers are rendered in sharp detail, shades of blue, white, and black that stand in striking contrast to the warm background. The sky fades from deep orange to soft yellow, evoking the subtle transition of sunrise or sunset, and the water below reflects this light in gentle ripples.
The scene carries a stillness that feels both tender and resolute. The anhinga's posture, alive with movement, captures a balance between strength and calm, embodying the bird's daily ritual of drying its feathers after a day of fishing. This practical act struck me as an emblem of resilience: how life finds a way forward, quiet but unwavering. Watching these birds, I'm reminded of the Phoenix myth, the idea of rising renewed, carrying power forged through challenge and renewal.
Creating Anhinga's Quiet Flame was a process of layering oil glazes and opaques, building depth gradually and allowing the colors to glow from within. Each layer added nuance to the feathers and the ambient light, reflecting the way natural moments reveal themselves slowly, in stages.
This painting isn't just about a bird standing against the light. It's about resilience in the everyday, the dignity found in routine, and the beauty that emerges when we take a moment to truly see what surrounds us. It's an invitation to recognize strength quietly carried, the kind that holds its head high and presses onward, no matter the day's weight.
Anhinga's Quiet Flame is part of my ongoing Coastal Birds series, painted here on the waters of Merritt Island, Florida. You can see the painting in full here: https://www.jennroyster.art/anhingas-quiet-flame
