Through the Barrell: Flight and Gallop United, oil painting by artist Jenn Royster

New original oil painting — 36×48 in, oil on canvas

Some paintings announce themselves quietly. This one did not. From the first brushstroke, I knew this canvas was asking for something bigger,  more courage, more movement, more willingness to follow the energy wherever it wanted to go. At 36×48 inches, Through the Barrel: Flight and Gallop United is the largest work in my current collection, and it opened a new chapter in my exploration of strength and transformation.

About the Painting

This painting captures a moment where a white horse and a large hawk move side by side, sharing a journey through a powerful wave of energy. Both figures are caught mid-motion. The horse galloping with its mane swept back as if driven by an invisible wind, the hawk soaring with wings fully extended, riding the same currents. Their movement feels purposeful and connected, a visual dialogue between earth and sky.

The background sets the stage with swirling blues, whites, and purples forming a vortex that suggests both a rushing wave and a spiral of energy. This is more than a backdrop,  it is the emotional force that carries these creatures forward. The ground beneath them anchors the scene with textured browns and greens, providing a steady contrast to the fluid dynamics above. The composition holds both wildness and intention, and that tension is the heart of the piece.

The Inspiration

My inspiration came from wanting to express the courage it takes to move through intense, transformative moments. The ocean wave represents the surge of strong emotions we face. The horse embodies resilience and change, galloping toward growth. The hawk offers a reminder to keep a broader perspective. To look ahead with clarity and insight, even when the path feels uncertain.

Together, they became something more than their individual symbolism. They became a partnership.  A reminder that transformation is not something we endure alone, but something we move through alongside the forces that carry us.

The Process

Working in oils on this large 36×48 canvas, I built the atmosphere through multiple layers of transparent glazes and opaque strokes, repeated several times. This process allowed me to create depth and a sense of movement that invites you into this moment of transition and unity. It was important that each layer enhance the energy and mood without overwhelming the forms. Letting the scene breathe with a natural flow, so the eye can travel and find new details with every viewing.

An Invitation

Through the Barrel: Flight and Gallop United is a piece about embracing transformation with strength and vision. It encourages a balance between grounded resolve and the freedom to rise above challenges. I hope it sparks a sense of determination and hope in those who engage with it, reflecting the courage required to persist and the clarity needed to see the path beyond the storm.

This is a statement piece. One that changes the energy of any room it enters. If you are drawn to art that moves you and reminds you of your own capacity to break through, this painting is waiting for you.
