Original oil and cold wax painting of two white egrets at the water's edge in golden sunset light by Jenn Royster

Whispers Along the Water's Edge is a new 30 by 24 inch oil and cold wax painting that invites you into a quiet moment shared between two white egrets standing close together in a wetland scene. The birds are captured with careful attention to their delicate feathers, which flow softly and seem almost weightless against the stillness of their surroundings. Their long necks curve gently, each beak pointing in a slightly different direction, as if they are attuned to subtle sounds carried on the breeze.

The background weaves together muted blues and earthy hues, grounded in natural tones but warmed by a subtle golden light that highlights the egrets and lends the scene a sense of calm and presence. Below them, the water reflects both the shapes of the birds and the glow around them, creating a layered harmony that brings depth and tranquility to the composition.

This painting grew from everyday moments in my own backyard here on Merritt Island, Florida, where these great white egrets visit regularly along the water's edge. Watching them flare their pristine plumage against the fading light of sunset created a quiet kind of awe, an experience of beauty that is simple yet profound. There's something deeply grounding about those coastal evenings, a peaceful stillness that encourages reflection and a gentle reminder to slow down.

Creating Whispers Along the Water's Edge involved building up layers of oil glaze and opaque paint, combined with cold wax to introduce texture and a soft, tactile glow. This process helped me capture not just the physical presence of the egrets, but also the way light interacts with their feathers and the water's surface, emphasizing the peaceful atmosphere that inspired the piece.

This painting is more than a portrait of birds. It's a moment of calm to carry with you. It speaks to the quiet connections we can find in nature, times when the world feels at ease and grace reveals itself without effort. My hope is that Whispers Along the Water's Edge offers a space to pause, breathe, and appreciate the subtle beauty that surrounds us, even in the simplest encounters.
