Harmony in the Last Glow

coastal wildlife nature inspires oil painting well being Dec 03, 2025
oil painting by artist Jenn Royster. Roseate spoonbills at sunset in coastal marsh.

I’m excited to share my latest oil painting, "Harmony in the Last Glow", a 36 by 48 inch work that captures a quiet moment where nature’s rhythm meets fading daylight. This piece draws you into a waterscape at sunset, where roseate spoonbills gather among marsh grasses as the sun dips below the horizon. The scene is warmed by the last light’s orange and yellow hues, reflected softly on the calm water’s surface. Against this glow, the birds appear in shades of purple and pink, their varied postures from standing still to foraging bringing a natural flow to the composition. Read full details on this painting in my portfolio.

The sky above deepens into blues and purples, dotted with textured clouds that enhance the atmosphere without overwhelming it. In the foreground, one bird extends its wings wide, a dynamic focal point that introduces movement and energy within the peaceful setting. The overall balance of stillness and life felt essential to this work, reflecting that fragile moment when the day’s busyness fades and everything feels in sync.

This painting was inspired by an evening when the vibrant sunset provided a soothing backdrop after a long day, as a group of roseate spoonbills came together for a shared meal in the marsh. It felt like a simple, meaningful act of connection and care. Reminding me how valuable it is to slow down and appreciate time spent together in nature’s quiet presence.

A unique element in creating this work was starting with a black gessoed canvas. Layering oil paints and glazes on that dark ground allowed me to build depth and vibrancy in the colors, especially in the warm light and the birds’ pinks and purples. It’s a method that gave the scene a richness beyond what a blank canvas might have offered.

"Harmony in the Last Glow" invites you to pause with me in that transitional light and space where movement and stillness coexist. It’s an expression of natural harmony. A reminder that even in endings, there is beauty, connection, and grace. I hope this painting encourages you to find moments where you can breathe in the last glow of your day and feel grounded by the simple wonders around you.
