New original oil painting — 12×12 in, oil on canvas

Some memories stay with you not because they were dramatic, but because something in them named a truth you'd been carrying for a long time. A visit to Costa Rica gave me one of those moments — and this painting is my way of giving it somewhere permanent to live.

About the Painting

Colors Carried on a Breath of Hope is a new 12×12-inch oil painting that captures a moment of life and resilience through the image of a Costa Rican Heron in flight. In this piece, the bird stretches its wings wide, showcasing an intense palette of blues, greens, reds, and whites that come together in a vibrant display of strength and beauty. The heron's elongated neck and sharply defined beak create a sense of intention and movement, as if it is lifted by an invisible current of air and possibility.

The background supports this energy with soft gradients of blues, greens, and earth tones, suggesting the calm yet alive environment of water and foliage where the heron naturally belongs. Bold brushstrokes and layered textures emphasize the bird's radiant colors while preserving a feeling of openness and flow. The composition balances boldness with grace, inviting viewers to feel both the power of the moment and the quiet presence beneath it.

The Inspiration

This painting was born from a memory that stays with me from a visit to Costa Rica. I was struck by the heron's combination of majesty and grace. How it moves with purpose, yet holds an elegant calm. That image became a symbol for me of perseverance and inner strength.  A reminder that when challenges arise, we can draw from a deep well of resilience to carry us forward.

The Process

The process of creating this work involved building layers of oil paint, alternating between translucent glazes and solid, confident strokes. This technique allowed me to develop an atmosphere where the heron's vivid colors could shine with clarity and depth. Repeating these layers brought out the texture and energy I wanted, enhancing both the bird's form and the sense of its flight.

An Invitation

Colors Carried on a Breath of Hope invites reflection on the power of persistence and the beauty that emerges when strength is paired with grace. It is a tribute to the quiet courage that lifts us through uncertain skies, and a celebration of the vibrant life found in every breath of hope.
